To HE Syed Ibne Abbas, Pakistan High Commissioner

Your Excellency,

Assalamo Alaikum

I write to bring to your attention, the case of Mr Abdul Shakoor (‘Shakoor Bhai’), an Ahmadi Muslim optician and bookshop owner who was arrested, convicted and imprisoned one year ago (on 2 January 2016) for stocking books on peace published by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, including the Holy Quran.

Eighty year old Shakoor Bhai is serving a shocking 8 years imprisonment under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism legislation and anti-Ahmadi legislation. This is a travesty of justice, especially when many extremists and terrorists – including those who have murdered peace-loving members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community simply on grounds of faith – roam free. How can Pakistan claim to uphold freedom of religion when such injustice prevails?

One year on, Shakoor Bhai remains in prison. I urge you to raise this matter with the Government of Pakistan to free Shakoor Bhai (and his innocent Shia shop assistant Mr Mazhar Abbas), immediately.

The authorities should instead focus on thwarting the efforts of the real terrorists of Pakistan who routinely incite violence, murder and mayhem and are destroying Pakistan’s hopes for peace and prosperity.

To the Prime Minister of UK, Rt Hon Theresa May MP

Dear Prime Minister,

One year ago on 2 January 2016, an Ahmadi optician and bookseller Mr Abdul Shakoor (‘Shakoor Bhai’), was arrested and imprisoned for 8 years for stocking books - including the Holy Quran - published by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Eighty year old Shakoor Bhai was convicted under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism legislation and anti-Ahmadi legislation and his arrest, conviction and imprisonment is a shocking travesty of justice. The use of anti-terror laws on this innocent, elderly gentleman is astonishing, especially when many extremists and terrorists – including those who have murdered peace loving members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community simply on grounds of faith – roam free.

This reflects the ongoing state-sponsored persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and I urge you to raise this matter with the Government of Pakistan and seek the immediate release of Shakoor Bhai (and his innocent Shia shop assistant Mr Mazhar Abbas who was also arrested and imprisoned).

The Pakistan authorities should be urged to focus on thwarting the efforts of the real terrorists of Pakistan, who routinely incite violence, murder and mayhem and are destroying Pakistan’s hopes for peace and prosperity. The Government of Pakistan must also be held accountable for its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and repeal its horrific blasphemy and anti-Ahmadiyya laws.

Yours sincerely
